Walk to a Healthy Lifestyle

A 20-minute walk a day is enough to add years to your life. And a 20-minute brisk walking can reduce early death by between 16 and 30%. That’s according to a new study from Cambridge University’s Medical Research Council Epidemiology Unit.
Therefore, a minimum of 20 minutes is needed for an exercise to get that small benefit. But if you want greater benefits, you have to have more time devoted to an exercise.
According to Professor Ulf Ekelund, head of the research team, “This is a simple message – just a small amount of physical activity each day could have substantial health benefits. Physical activity should be an important part of our daily life.” Cambridge’s researchers studied the most recent data of 9.2 million deaths among Europeans and found out that an estimated 337,000 deaths were due to obesity. On the other hand, 676,000 were due to physical inactivity. The report was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Research team member Professor Nick Wareham pointed out that the biggest killers are cardiovascular disease and types of cancer like cancer of the intestines which regular exercise can ward off. “Brisk walking is just an example, as doing any exercise for the required time is just as good,” he added.
“Adults should aim to do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week, carrying it out in sessions of 10 minutes or more.”
The link between physical inactivity and premature death was measured by the researchers by looking at data from 334,161 European men and women, with just under a quarter of participants categorized as inactive. During the 12-year plus period of study, it was found that the greatest reduction in risk of premature death came when people moved from the inactive and moderately inactive group into activity.
According to June Davison of the British Heart Foundation, “The results of this study are a clear reminder that being regularly physically active can reduce the risk of dying from coronary heart disease.”
With these recent findings, we encourage all to become active by walking, or better yet, briskly walking, for at least 20 minutes. That way, you not only prolong the life you have right now, but you are able to ward off diseases that can be prevented by regular activities. Besides, walking or briskly walking is far more inexpensive than having yourself enrolled in a gym just to use their treadmills.
