Unusual tricks in de-stressing

There are a lot of tips to relieve stress! We have heard about those deep breathing exercises, singing and good night sleep decreasing stress but how about trying something different from the usual stress reliever.


Everyone knows that oatmeal is great for people because it lowers cholesterol, but did you know it is also good for you mentally? The magnesium and potassium in this breakfast snack can lower blood pressure, making you feel more relaxed. In addition, regular oatmeal consumption can boost your serotonin levels, which is a hormone that contributes to your overall happiness.

A handful of walnuts daily help lower blood pressure and thus, drop off stress. “Walnuts contain fiber, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, all of which have a positive effect on blood pressure,” says Dr. Sheila West of Pennsylvania State University.


Orange juice is not just delicious and nutritious. It can also make you feel less anxious. WebMD said that foods and drinks high in Vitamin C, such as orange juice, physiologically reduce stress by lowering levels of stress hormones, including cortisol. Two glasses of this fruit juice per day do the trick.

Chewing gum

Chewing gum is commonly used to freshen one’s breath and reduce snacking but in a 2008 study by Andrew Scholey, Ph.D., he considered that participants who regularly chewed gum verified lower levels of anxiety, increased alertness, reduced stress and improvement with multi-tasking.

Blow up a balloon

Blowing up a balloon does two important things that make a stress relief: first, it makes you breathe deeper, because you have to use your diaphragm and second, it makes you breathe more slowly. Both of these activate one’s parasympathetic nervous system, which reduces our heart rate and relaxes muscles. Also, a paper published in the North American Journal of Sports Physical Therapy said that, balloon blowing helps to improve our posture and our core stability.

“Dear Diary”

According to Dr. Matthew Lieberman, a neuroscientist at the University of California, writing down one’s feelings in a diary or poem can avoid stress build-up. “When you put feelings into words, you are turning on the same regions in the brain that are involved in emotional self-control,” Dr Lieberman says. “It seems to regulate our distress.”


Art and music therapy are proven techniques used to relieve stress. Painting, doodling or just listening to music takes your mind off to the thing that stresses you and thus, promotes relaxation. Most likely, you will return to your everyday life with lesser stress and clearer mind after having some art and music time.


It is pretty obvious that when you are laughing, you are probably enjoying. However, laughing also does things to your body that can reduce stress more long term. It reduces cortisol levels and releases endorphins. Your outlook on things that were previously stressing you can tremendously improve, even after what you laughed at is gone.

Have a fur-riend

According to PubMed, owning a pet can increase a person’s health in many ways. Studies have shown that dog owners are less stressed than those who do not own a dog. It is theorized that receiving the unconditional love of an animal plays a big part in their ability to make their owners happy.
