Lanzones wasn’t specifically mentioned in 70’s rock icon Sampaguita’ song entitled Laguna, but indeed when you ask about this fruit and that place are connected. However, lanzones are also growing in different parts of the Philippines like in Camiguin, Cagayan de Oro, Davao del Norte, and Butuan. In Camiguin they even have Lanzones festival every third week of October, while Laguna celebrates Paet-Taka-Lanzones Festival in September.
The taste of lanzones is usually sweet, but also sour at the same time. Its seeds are green, but have translucent flesh inside. Outside, it has yellow peel and white sap when squeezed. Fiber and riboflavin (also known as vitamin B2) are two prominent contents of lanzones. As everybody knows human body needs daily dose of fiber to shed toxins. Otherwise, sickness such as diabetes, heart disease or cancer can happen. According to Livestrong.com, 3.5 ounces of lanzones are equal to 2 grams of fiber and 124 micrograms of riboflavin per serving. The site added that riboflavin is needed for nervous system health and to transform carbohydrates into energy.
Apart from the two, lanzones also have phosphorus (30 g), calcium (20 g), thiamine (89 mcg), phytin (1.1 mg) ascorbic acid (1 g), vitamin A (13 IU), and protein (0.8 g). If riboflavin is for carbohydrates, thiamine is for sugar as it helps to digest the said substance. Meantime lanzones plants are also good to keep for your safety. According to Interaksyon, the plant’s bark can treat diarrhea and scorpion stings, while burning its dried peel can shoo mosquitoes away.
Unfortunately, lanzones is one of the seasonal fruits and its only abundant mostly during summer around March and April, as well as in October.
