Exercise is a vital part of a healthy diet plan. It’s easy to plan but sticking to it is hard especially when you don’t know where to start.
Here’s how to start an exercise program and stick to it, while keeping your excitement level high:
1. Set a goal
The most important part of starting an exercise program is identifying a goal. Without a goal, you won’t go places. If your goal is to be healthier and more active, aim for moderately intense exercise at least 30 minutes a day. If your aim is to lose weight, hit 60 to 90 minutes of work out a day. Mix up the intensity by doing a few days of walking and two days of jogging. Strength training is also good when targeting muscle groups. Try lifting weights or abdominal exercises, lunges, and squats but not everyday so muscles can rest.
2. Choose your activities
Avoid boring exercises by mixing it up. Try mixing exercise with sports such as tennis or badminton, regular walks to occasional hikings and brisk walks for a bike ride. Instead of regularly hitting the gym, you can choose activities that you find enjoyable.
3. Schedule
Part of the reason why we don’t get to exercise and stick to it is because of our hectic schedules. If you’re really into your goal, you can find ways to fit exercise in your busy schedule. Why not try waking up a little earlier than usual? Schedule it during breaks or after work.
4. Get a motivator
It’s hard to stay motivated week after week of exercise. Try inviting a friend along or join fitness groups to get that extra motivation to show up and work hard. One alternative is getting a personal trainer to guide you and help you achieve that fitness program suitable to your needs.
5. Track your progress
Tracking your progress keeps you motivated. You get to see the progress from start to finish. Over time you’ll see the improvements you’re making and be motivated to do more.
