Sipping fresh fruit juices is a refreshing and delightful experience, that’s why juicing for cleansing and weight loss purposes is becoming very popular nowadays.
But, if not done properly, juicing can pose a risk to your body as well. So before you follow the “juicing craze” here are some disadvantages of juicing that you should be aware of:
A JUICE DIET HAS LOW CALORIES
This may sound more of benefits rather than disadvantages of juicing especially on persons who want to lose weight. But according to Applegate, the low-calorie intake that comes with juicing could send the body into starvation mode.
This means that the body will try to conserve calories by slowing down the metabolism. Because of a low-calorie intake, juicing can indeed cause a little weight loss. But this weight loss is mostly water weight and will be more likely gained again when a person resumes usual eating habits.
CLEANSES ARE COMMONLY LOW IN PROTEIN
Another disadvantage of juicing is that they contain very low amount of protein or no protein at all. A person needs a daily supply of protein for building muscle tissues and healthy immune cells and to repair muscles during wear and tear.
Because of this, a person with little stores of protein may be more susceptible to acquire infections when they start a juicing diet.
JUICE LACKS THE FIBER
Another disadvantage of juicing fruits and vegetables is that in the juicing process, it removes an important thing: fiber. It’s the fiber that keeps us full and satisfied when eating raw fruits or vegetables.
Also, fiber helps promote the growth of good bacteria in the intestines to aid in the absorption of nutrients and minerals. Fiber also helps in preventing constipation. It is also linked with in protecting the body against inflammatory bowel disease, bowel cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis.
JUICE CAN CAUSE STOMACH UPSET
Fruits that contain a high amount of citric acid can irritate the sensitive lining of the stomach leading to stomach aches and hyperacidity.
JUICING ROBS YOU OF THE ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS
Some nutrients found in fruits or vegetables start to be lost the moment you cut it and exposed in the light and air. This is true with antioxidants and phytonutrients which are essential in our health and well-being.
Fresh fruit juices and raw fruits and vegetables are a beneficial part of a healthy diet. Incorporating these to your meal gives you the cleansing benefits that you need.
But if you still want to consider juicing, be sure to consult a physician for you to determine if you are physically prepared and to ensure that you reap the benefits rather than the risks.
