Being a traditional runner, or an aspiring one, adding a spice of technology to your routine is somewhat intriguing and challenging. There are options like GPS tracking and social sharing. Here are some choices of smartphone apps for long time runners or for fitness newbie:
1. Nike+ Running
It’s a smartphone app perfect for runners who are diehard fans of Nike. It is an app that is continuously improving and responding to user’s feedback. More challenging training plans have been incorporated and recently, they are able to make it ideal for city running. Yes! Now you don’t have to rest your workout manually.
But due to numerous functionalities, you have to deal with many settings before you find the one that suits you best.
2. Runtastic Pro
This smartphone app is not only for runners but also for multisport athletes. Even when you only use the free version of this app, it is surprisingly fully operational. The only edge of choosing the Pro version will be the voice coaching and training plans. The developer also continuously adds other versions of this “-tastic” apps. You can also track biking, walking, skiing, and other sports.
The downside of this app is that the interface is not easy to use and seem to be crash prone than other running apps.
3. Running for Weight Loss
As the name of the app implies, it is the only smartphone app for runners who wants to shed some pounds. It is a great app for interval training. You have three levels to choose from based on your current ability. And then the app will provide you with a program of interval workout that integrates walking, running, and sprinting. The programs are challenging but achievable. Also this app won’t cause any nosebleed with a numerous set up. You just need to click one button and you’re ready to work out.
The downside of this app is that it has a pattern work out, so its predictability can bore you or have you backing out once you anticipate the degree of difficulty of the next challenge.
4. Zombies, Run!
This smartphone app is for bored runners who need a little extra push and an extra scare! There’s the basic feature like GPS tracking, and music— but it’s also a multi-player game. You pick a playlist, and then in between tracks the app unfolds the story. You are not just running, either you pick up supplies or dashing away from the un-dead. It also tickles your imagination in the zombie chases mode as you can hear the zombies breathing right behind you. I wonder if that doesn’t make you run faster.
5. Strong Runner
Any sport can make an athlete prone to injuries such as sprain, strain, and spasms among others. This app is also a standard training app plus an overview and some tips for dealing with common running injuries. It also provides warm-up and stretching to avoid injuries because the exercises were designed by an ultra marathoner and his physician just for runners. The routines are easy to follow and feature real people who demonstrate the exercise.
The downside is that you have to make in-app purchases for the work outs, otherwise, it will just be your basic tracking app.
6. Couch to 5K
If you’re a runner newbie and lacks the motivation to get started or to continue, this app is great for you. Couch to 5K makes starting a training program as easy as possible. The program minimizes strain because of warm-up combination of walking and running. Challenge yourself two to three times a week, and in nine to ten weeks you’ll be ready to finish a 5K.
